Passengers traveling to or from France today are facing significant disruption as the French air traffic control strike impacts flights nationwide. Airlines, including Ryanair and Jet2, are urging travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
French Air Traffic Control Strike: Widespread Flight Cancellations
Public sector workers, including French ATC staff, began their strike early on Thursday, and it’s set to continue until 5am UK time on Friday, 6 December. The French civil aviation authority, Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile (DGAC), has asked airlines to cancel a portion of their flights to reduce disruptions.
According to local reports:
- Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport: 10% of flights canceled between 6am and 12 noon.
- Paris Orly Airport: 25% of flights canceled between 6pm and midnight.
- Marseille Airport: 50% of flights canceled from 7pm to midnight.
- Toulouse Airport: 20% of flights canceled throughout Thursday.
Beyond cancellations, delays are expected across France and for flights passing through French airspace. Knock-on effects are likely to spill into Friday.
The DGAC stated: “Despite these preventive measures, disruption and delays are nevertheless to be expected.” Passengers who can postpone their journeys are being advised to do so.
Airline Updates During the French ATC Strike
Ryanair
Ryanair announced it has canceled a small number of flights and is monitoring potential delays. The airline has notified affected passengers via email and app updates. Ryanair’s statement said: “We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused by this latest French ATC strike, which is beyond our control.” Travelers are encouraged to stay updated via the Ryanair app.

Our teams are working hard to minimize disruption.”
Tips for Travelers During the French Air Traffic Control Strike
If you’re flying to, from, or over France, here’s what you should do:
- Check Your Flight Status: Monitor your airline’s app or website for real-time updates.
- Arrive Early: Ensure you’re at the airport well in advance of your scheduled departure time.
- Be Prepared for Delays: Bring essentials like snacks, entertainment, and chargers for potential waiting periods.
- Consider Alternative Travel Options: If possible, postpone your journey until after the strike ends.
This strike underscores the importance of staying informed during travel disruptions. Airlines and airport teams are working hard to minimize the impact, but delays and cancellations remain a reality for many passengers today.
