A €5-million grant awarded by the Valencian government to keep hotels open in Benidorm during the winter months will not only benefit Spanish pensioners but also those from aboard.
In announcing this week that around 80 percent of hotels will remain open in Benidorm and other resorts along the Valencian coast, the General Secretary of the Hosbec Hotel Association, Nuria Montes, above, encouraged elderly people living in cold areas of Spain to come to places such as Benidorm in winter to escape high energy bills.
She said:
It is cheaper to come to a hotel in Benidorm than to live at home. An elderly person could stay for a week in the tourist capital, with full board and other services such as entertainment, for around 200 euros.
In order to attract pensioners from abroad this winter, Benidorm is being promoted in the UK and the Benilux countries with a “Benidorm Generation” marketing campaign.
Montes was speaking at the launch of this year’s Imserso holiday programme, which provides subsidised holidays to pensioners living in Spain, whatever their nationality.
Montes added that € 5 million awarded by the Generalitat Valenciana has enabled many hotels to remain open. Without it, some 70-80 percent of the hotels would have closed their doors.
What to do in Benidorm and its surroundings during the winter months
Apart from offering enjoyable day trips to Valencia and beauty spots such as the Algar Waterfalls and Guadalest, other places to visit—each with its own unique attractions— include: Altea, Denia, Jávea, Calpe, Alfaz del Pi, Finestrat, Villajoyosa, Alicante, Callosa and Tabarca Island.
The climate
Bear in mind that Benidorm in winter has a unique micro-climate. The city basks in some of the most pleasant temperatures in southern Europe because it is surrounded by mountain formations offering shelter from cold fronts and most rain showers.
This is in stark contrast to other parts of Spain where cold and rain prevent you from enjoying outdoor activities. Here you can take walks at any time of day, go hiking, savour the best of Mediterranean cuisine, and much more.
