The importance of British visitors to Benidorm was emphasised today by Spanish newspaper Las Provincias which reported that “beyond the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and its other Kingdoms and Territories and the countries belonging to the Commonwealth of Nations, the news has caused a deep impact in the city of Benidorm.”

The report was accompanied by a photo of a message of condolence on the huge Tecnohito sign in the heart of the resort.

There were other signs too, such as the one outside the Flash Hotel, above.

Message from the Mayor

Mayor Toni Pérez said:

I am deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. We wish to express our deepest condolences to the British Royal Family and the People of the United Kingdom.

Tributes at Pride

The death of the Queen came as Benidorm was in the midst of celebrating its 12th Pride—a week-long event.

One of the Pride organisers, Sammy Kruz who hosted the White Party last night, told a massive audience:

Tonight I would like you all to raise your glasses to an international icon, Queen Elizabeth II.

Sammy said:

Everyone fell silent. I then told the audience that they were free to applaud if they wished to do so, and a huge cheer erupted.

Sammy said he would be repeating the tribute at events tonight and tomorrow when the festival draws to a close with a parade of thousands through the town from 5 pm onward.
