She said: It is cheaper to come to a hotel in Benidorm than to live at home. An elderly person could stay for a week in the tourist capital, with full board and other services such as entertainment, for around 200 euros. In order to attract pensioners from abroad this winter, Benidorm is being promoted in the UK and the Benilux countries with a “Benidorm Generation” marketing campaign. Montes was speaking at the launch of this year’s Imserso holiday programme, which provides subsidised holidays to pensioners living in Spain, whatever their nationality. Montes added that € 5 million awarded by the Generalitat Valenciana has enabled many hotels to remain open. Without it, some 70-80 percent of the hotels would have closed their doors. Ahead of the hotel’s 2022 debut, Spanish site El Confidencial reported that until Accor acquired the Benilux Park Benidorm had no globally branded hotels. Accor has 5,100 hotels in 110 countries. Of these 810 hotels in 64 countries bear the Mecure brand. Ten of them are in Spain. This report adds there is a growing demand among visitors to Spain for internationally-branded hotels. Cristina Ramos-Fernandez, Chief Operating Officer of franchised hotels in Southern Europe for Accor, said such destinations as Benidorm and Torremolinos—which is farther south on Spain’s Costa del Sol—now are attracting guests who book their hotels and flights separately and do not want to book package vacations and all-inclusive. Globally in Southern Europe’s hospitality market, there is a trend to change the mass-tourists destinations market offer to attract more individual customers and break away from the exclusive distribution of tour operators. The seasonal adjustments of some destinations and the repositioning of hotel assets are supporting the development of projects in some locations such as Benidorm. This trend has attracted international chains’ attention. The retro-styled Bus Turistico is a familiar sight in Benidorm, and over the years has taken hundreds of thousands of tourists to various parts of the city. It has almost a dozen daily routes that run from Rincón de Loix to La Cala. But will it run for much longer? This Spanish report reports that the issue of legality was raised this week by Juan Balastegui, spokesperson for the Municipal Group of Citizens (Ciudadanos). Balastegui warned that the City Council could be committing an alleged “crime of prevarication and demanded that steps be taken to immediately immobilise the vehicle. Ciudadanos insisted: We cannot let Benidorm be a city without law for some, especially those close to the government in power. Municipal sources have given an assurance that the local government, chaired by Mayor Toni Pérez, is aware of the lack of permits in relation to Bus Turistico and that “some decision” will be made soon regarding its future. Over the years it has staged numerous fundraising events to help find ideal homes for these animals. According to its Facebook page, rescued dogs are placed in foster homes and the charity remains fully responsible for their care and well-being. Its latest fundraising event—Save My Life 8— takes place on October 2 at Benidorm Palace, the city’s top entertainment venue. According to a report in Las Provincias more than 80 percent of hotels will remain open, making around 32,000 beds available. The scheme extended to tourist attractions and campsites. The Visit Benidorm Foundation together with Hosbec and Turisme Comunitat Valenciana is working on the scheme. A “Benidorm Generation” promotional campaign has been launched to target tourists over 50 and retired people who have high purchasing power. Image courtesy Diputación de Alicante The councilor in charge of street cleaning, José Ramón González de Zárate, above, is quoted in this report as saying that the cleaning campaign will reach all neighborhoods and park-and-ride parks in the city. He said that while extra measures had been taken during the summer months to maintain Benidorm’s high levels of cleanliness, the sheer number of visitors to the resort in 2022 made cleaning operations “more complex.” He explained that during the summer Cleaning has been intensified at the busiest points, and although action has been taken throughout the city, it has not been possible to do so in all corners with the same depth and thoroughness as at other times of the year. Hence, now that the occupation and the volume of people have decreased, we can allocate more means to this extraordinary campaign and reach all points of the municipal area, including peripheral green areas. Latest News Art loving Benidorm unveils yet another new outdoor exhibition by Benidorm Travel Mart 1 September 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 6 minutes read Following the success of an exhibition of Quinze’s monumental works in Valencia in 2019, it’s been revealed today (Thursday) by Spanish news outlet El Periódico that Paseo de Poniente which runs along Poniente beach has started installing the artist’s work. Once all of his sculptures are put in place by the weekend, the exhibition—called “My Secret Garden“—will remain in place until May 2023. “My Secret Garden” is made up of six extremely colourful sculptures, several meters high, made of aluminum. Quinze will explain his works on September 15 from 7:30 pm during a guided tour of the exhibition, which will be open to all. The addition of Quinze’s work has turned the Poniente beachfront into a vast outdoor gallery, for they complement existing sculptures by three internationally renowned artists such as Hung Yi, Juan Mejica and Arne Quinze. In July this year, a series of Mejica’s works were unveiled on the beachfront, where they will remain until October 9. Perez said: This is an exhibition of the highest level made up of seven large sculptures by a sculptor of recognised national and international prestige who has works spread over five continents. Hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists will be able to admire the art over the next three months. Councilor for Benidorm’s Historical and Cultural Heritage (Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències), Ana Pellicer, said: Few cities in the world can boast of having such a a large concentration of first-class sculptural art in a space in less than a kilometer. She added that the works on display are an indication of “the great interest that our city arouses among artists and cultural promoters.” Pellicer said that Paseo de Poniente and Mediterráneo Avenue and its surroundings are locations not only for avant-garde architecture and design but are also ideal for artistic creations. Pellicer said of “My Secret Garden”: This is second sculpture exhibition brought to Benidorm by the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, which has also recently collaborated with the Department of Historical and Cultural Heritage to bring to the city the “The Towers of the Alhambra” by Cristóbal Gabarrón to the city. This year the jackpot will be €2,408-BILLION! El Gordo, and lesser lottery draws are used by criminals to carry out what’s called ‘Tocomocho’ scams, and today (Tuesday) Spanish outlet Información used the arrest of a man and a woman at a Benidorm campsite to issue ‘Tocomocho’ warning. The word, according to The Nomad Today comes from the Spanish expression Tocó mucho which occurs when a victim is approached on the street by a stranger who claims to hold a winning lottery ticket but is unable to collect the money for some reason. Scammers offer a fake or doctored winning ticket in exchange for a large sum of money. If the victim agrees, they accompany them to their home or bank, collect an agreed amount in exchange for the “winning” lottery ticket. Arrested pair allegedly part of a ‘tocomocho’ gang Información reports that the National Police arrested two alleged members of one of the most active Spanish gangs dedicated to carrying out “tocomocho” scam. Investigators link the couple arrested with at least four scams involving more than €42,000. Elderly victims were targeted in the Benidorm area and Alicante. The accused—a man and a woman of 35 and 32 years, respectively— are said to have targeted people aged between 70 and 80. One of the swindlers pretended to be illiterate or “insane” and used O.N.C.E coupons already drawn to make their victims believe they had won. These types of scams are are reported on the rise, which is why the Citizen Participation Units of the National Police regularly give talks in day centers, civic centers or nursing homes, alerting mainly elderly people about the existence of this type of crime. Agents give older people guidelines for prevention and how to act against them. It is also recommended that you immediately report the facts to the National Police if you have been a victim of one of these crimes to enable them to start investigation procedures immediately. Latest News Board a Benidorm bus and save a great deal on holiday transport costs by Barry Duke 29 August 2022 written by Barry Duke 8 minutes read Whenever friends come over from the UK to visit me, the first thing I advise them to do is to buy one of several travel cards offered by bus operating company, Avanza. These are sold on board buses and they can save you a sizeable amount of money. For example, the seven-day (7D) card costs just €32 and allows unlimited travel throughout Benidorm, neighbouring resorts such as Altea as well as excursion trips to places like Guadalest and Fuentes del Algar. If you are planning a longer stay, then choose the simple Avanza bus card (BonoBús), pictured above. It costs €2 plus an initial top-up fee of either €10 or €20. Each time you use the card, €1.40 will be deducted from your balance. You can top up you balance at any time on any bus. A single journey on all routes (excluding bus numbers 21, 22 and 23 which serve the Villajoyosa area) costs €1.40 if you use BonoBús, This represents a saving of 15 cents per journey. This does not sound like much, but if you are on a tight budget, as so many of us are these days. it’s important to watch the pennies. See the full list of tariffs here. A great deal for the over-65s and the disabled. My Tarjeta Oro makes me look like I’m on the run from Interpol but I wouldn’t be without it. For ex-pats living in Benidorm, I would highly recommend the Gold Card (Tarjeta Oro), which brings each journey price down to just €1.09. These personalised cards are only available from the city hall. You will need to show your passport and other documents such as your Padron, plus two passport photos. Once you’ve filled out a form, you’ll need to go to a bank to pay €4, bring the receipt back to the Ajuntament de Benidorm and within a couple of weeks you should get a notification that your card is ready for collection. You can then load it on any of Benidorm’s buses with €10 or more. Don’t top up for more than €20 because if you lose the card, you can say goodbye to the credit balance that was on it. The same, of course, applies to other cards that can be topped up. Please observe bus etiquette The buses operated in Benidorm by Mexican company Avanza are kept immaculate—more so since the pandemic— and Spanish people, by and large help maintain this levels of cleanliness by not treating them as garbage trucks. Unfortunately, some holidaymakers tend not only to drop their litter in them, but also behave disrespectfully by shouting and singing and putting their feet on seats. Also, men try to board buses bare-chested and get stroppy when drivers order them to put on shirts. A few years back I wrote a column for an English weekly in Spain about tourists behaving badly on buses. It was sparked by a trio of middle-aged Brits who were bellowing out I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of coconuts. They annoyed the hell out of me and the rest of the passengers, and I commissioned a Californian artist friend of mine, Shell Fisher, to do an illustration to accompany the article. Chanel’s performance in Turin was broadcast live in Benidorm and Eurovision fans turned out in their thousands to enjoy a free party at the resort’s Plaza Triangular, thanks to the City Council. Now, according to this Spanish news site, the Generalitat Valenciana has announced that it plans to build on the success of the 2022 event—which it supported with a grant of €1-m—by adding more complementary attractions and spreading the 2023 festival over a longer period. A financial success Image via YouTube The General Director of Tourism, Herick Campos, above, said the money was well spent because the event generated more than €13-m in revenue and “projected the Valencian Community at a national and international level” via TV broadcasts and on social media. Campos anticipates that the 2023 event, beginning at the end of next January, will reach 80 percent of visitors to Benidorm, rising to 85 percent when the final is staged on Saturday, February 4. He added: Fest 2023 offers Benidorm the opportunity to open up to other markets and add other perspectives, in addition to attracting demand out of high season.
