Latest News Benidorm cleaning trucks are out in force by Benidorm Travel Mart 8 September 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 10 minutes read After a “summer of maximum tourist occupancy”, Benidorm City Council this month launched an “extraordinary” cleaning campaign aimed at reaching areas of the resort that are difficult to access during the summer season. Image courtesy Diputación de Alicante The councilor in charge of street cleaning, José Ramón González de Zárate, above, is quoted in this report as saying that the cleaning campaign will reach all neighborhoods and park-and-ride parks in the city. He said that while extra measures had been taken during the summer months to maintain Benidorm’s high levels of cleanliness, the sheer number of visitors to the resort in 2022 made cleaning operations “more complex.” He explained that during the summer Cleaning has been intensified at the busiest points, and although action has been taken throughout the city, it has not been possible to do so in all corners with the same depth and thoroughness as at other times of the year. Hence, now that the occupation and the volume of people have decreased, we can allocate more means to this extraordinary campaign and reach all points of the municipal area, including peripheral green areas. Mayor calls on citizens to collaborate with the campaign Image via YouTube Benidorm’s Mayor, Toni Pérez, above, said that “we calculate that in 30 days, this action will have reached all areas.” and has stressed that: The results of this extraordinary effort can only be maintained over time with the collaboration of all. Keeping our streets clean and free of odours is a task in which we must all get involved De Zárate has asked pet owners to help as much as possible by picking up and responsibly disposing of their animal’s excrement and rinsing spots where they have urinated. Reuse of water from swimming pools It takes a great deal of water to hose down Benidorm’s streets, and De Zárate said that some of the water would come from the Palau d’Esports l’Illa swimming pool. Every year when the pool is emptied at the end of August to carry out maintenance work, we carry out this same operation of collecting and reusing this water, thus guaranteeing maximum use. The counselor added that people who intend to empty their pools should contact that council to collect it rather than pour it into the sewer system. Latest News Art loving Benidorm unveils yet another new outdoor exhibition by Benidorm Travel Mart 1 September 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 6 minutes read Following the success of an exhibition of Quinze’s monumental works in Valencia in 2019, it’s been revealed today (Thursday) by Spanish news outlet El Periódico that Paseo de Poniente which runs along Poniente beach has started installing the artist’s work. Once all of his sculptures are put in place by the weekend, the exhibition—called “My Secret Garden“—will remain in place until May 2023. “My Secret Garden” is made up of six extremely colourful sculptures, several meters high, made of aluminum. Quinze will explain his works on September 15 from 7:30 pm during a guided tour of the exhibition, which will be open to all. Photo by Barry Duke Benidorm’s mayor, Toni Pérez, said the pieces will be installed along the section of Paseo de Poniente closest to La Cala, from the intersection of Armada Española and Vicente Llorca Alós Avenues to Puerto RicoAvenue, where a large sculpture by Taiwanese artist Hung Yi of two swans, above, stands. The addition of Quinze’s work has turned the Poniente beachfront into a vast outdoor gallery, for they complement existing sculptures by three internationally renowned artists such as Hung Yi, Juan Mejica and Arne Quinze. In July this year, a series of Mejica’s works were unveiled on the beachfront, where they will remain until October 9. Perez said: This is an exhibition of the highest level made up of seven large sculptures by a sculptor of recognised national and international prestige who has works spread over five continents. Hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists will be able to admire the art over the next three months. Councilor for Benidorm’s Historical and Cultural Heritage (Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències), Ana Pellicer, said: Few cities in the world can boast of having such a a large concentration of first-class sculptural art in a space in less than a kilometer. She added that the works on display are an indication of “the great interest that our city arouses among artists and cultural promoters.” Pellicer said that Paseo de Poniente and Mediterráneo Avenue and its surroundings are locations not only for avant-garde architecture and design but are also ideal for artistic creations. Pellicer said of “My Secret Garden”: This is second sculpture exhibition brought to Benidorm by the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, which has also recently collaborated with the Department of Historical and Cultural Heritage to bring to the city the “The Towers of the Alhambra” by Cristóbal Gabarrón to the city. Gabarrón’s exhibition, opened in mid-June, can be seen in the Plaza de la Hispanidad, Gambo Street and Avenida del Mediterráneo. It will run until January 2023. ActivitiesBlog Treat yourselves to a trip to Spain’s least populated island by Benidorm Travel Mart 26 August 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 6 minutes read Tabarca is situated about five kilometers from Santa Pola and 13 kilometres from the city of Alicante, the municipality to which it belongs. It is two kilometers long and about 400 meters wide. There is a path going around the island which allows visitors to get to know the place and view the coastal landscape as well as track the movements of marine birds. The island’s clear waters, abundant flora and fauna, and colourful sea floor—highly rated by divers—were determining factors when it was declared a Marine Reserve in 1986. There is a ferry service to the island from the port of Santa Pola and also from Alicante harbour and Benidorm. Santa Pola is a town settled over the ruins of a Roman village called Portus Ilicitanus (literally, Harbour of Elche). Tabarca is 1,800 meters long and 400 meters wide, which allows one to walk from one end to the other. Evidence has been discovered that it was populated during Roman times, although it is known for being a refuge for Muslim pirates who arrived from North Africa. These attacked Christian ships or carried out incursions on the coast. As a consequence, King Carlos III ordered the fortification of the island in 1760. What to see in Tabarca Before reaching the island from the sea the first thing you see are tits fortified walls and the Baroque church of San Pedro y San Pablo, which was built in 1779. The church has two square towers that act as bell towers. Added to this is the Governor’s House, now converted into a hotel and the Llop Marí Caves, one of the most dramatic features of Tabarca. This area comprises a series of cliffs overlooking a deep well of emerald green water that crashes against the rocks and laps up against several massive caves. There is a small beach down below and a sandy area where you relax and swim. Other not-to-be missed features are the Nueva Tabarca museum, a 19th-century lighthouse, and the highly-rated Amparin Restaurant. Image courtesy Region of Valencia The island is surrounded by spectacular turquoise waters ideal for snorkeling or diving, as is the tiny “Pirate island” that’s much closer to Benidorm How to reach the island The closest town to Tabarca is Santa Pola, from where ferries leave and reach the island in just 25 minutes. It can also be accessed from Alicante. The return ferry trip from Alicante costs €21.00 (you can book tickets online here) and from Santa Pola (€15 euros) here. You can also book an excursion from the port of Benidorm to Tabarca and Alicante for €35 per adult here. Blog Bag a bargain, plus a taste of Spanish food and culture, at Benidorm’s fabulous antique market by Benidorm Travel Mart 22 August 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 5 minutes read So many of us love bargain-hunting. But few first-timers to Benidorm are aware that, in addition to the marvelous seaside attractions that make the resort one of Europe’s key holiday destinations, the city has a large antique emporium and flea market on its outskirts called El Cisne where you’ll find treasures galore. One lover of the market summed up El Cisne well when they wrote on Tripadvisor: A worthy trip out around the market with a multitude of secondhand and vintage items for sale. Prices vary but a great chance to enjoy Spanish hospitality with good food at great prices and entertainment. A great way to unwind from the beach and bars and get a taste of real Spain. Buses are easy to use and stop right outside. Another enthusiast wrote: Great second-hand and antique market selling hundreds of different types of goods. The market is held every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday with free entertainment on Sunday lunchtimes. You will find antiques, clothes, electrical goods, pottery, china and some real junk too. It’s a great market, particularly on Sundays when it is really busy. You can wander around the stalls, grab a bite to eat and maybe pick up a real bargain. El Cisne is on the road to Alfas de Pi, and the best way to reach it, if you rely on public transport, is the No 10 bus. Once there, according to this site (in Spanish), you will find a large antiques emporium. The adjacent market area has around 80 stalls where you can discover items ranging from used military equipment to decorative china plates, jewellery, and books in several languages. A recreational area has several cafeterias that can accommodate more than 700 people. These offer a variety of entertainment, including flamenco shows. Latest News Spotted deer population flourishes in Benidorm by Benidorm Travel Mart 14 August 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 4 minutes read In April this year, staff at Terra Natura were delighted to announce the birth of two chital fawns, a species native to the Indian subcontinent. But problems arose when they were rejected by their mothers. However, thanks to the efforts of veterinarians and caretakers, the two young fawns survived, and this week we learned that they are now in the process of being reintroduced into Terra Natura’s growing herd of chirals. According to this Spanish report, the pair—a female and a male—had to be raised by hand by staff who bottle-fed them with an infant formula. One of the rescued chitals. Image via YouTube/Terra Natura Four months of tender, loving care enabled staff to begin the process of returning the youngsters to the herd. The reintegration process began with the offspring being kept for periods of 15 minutes together with the park’s herd of chitals. The result has reportedly been good. Causes of rejection Fawns can be rejected by their mothers for different reasons. One that the mother is a first-timer and does not know how to interact with her offspring. On other occasions, the mother may not feel strong enough to take care of her fawn. A third reason is that the fawn might be extreme weak at birth, which makes the mother instinctively reject it if she considers that It has no chance of surviving naturally. Blog How the istsy bitsy, teeny weenie bikini led to Benidorm’s famous hilltop cross by Benidorm Travel Mart 1 August 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 5 minutes read Earlier this year, in a piece about Benidorm’s many myths and truths, we looked at how the resort got permission from General Franco to become the first resort in Spain to allow women to wear bikinis in the 1950s Benidorm’s visionary mayor—Pedro Zaragoza—was the man who approached the murderous fascist dictator directly and asked for permission to allow bikinis. Surprisingly, Franco, a staunch Catholic, readily agreed, but Zaragoza’s determination to unleash “immodest” swimwear on the resort’s beaches horrified the Catholic Church, which at the time had enormous power in Spain. Photo by Mikhail Nilov via Pexels So angry was the RCC that it threatened him with excommunication. The mayor explained: In those days excommunication was a form of civil death. You became a leper in society. In addition to threatening excommunication, the then Bishop of Orihuela—Pablo Barrachina Estevan—also threatened to put up signs up outside the town, branding Benidorm “El Infierno” (Hell!). And as part of a “Day of Forgiveness” back in 1961, the faithful carried a huge wooden cross from the church of San Jaime up to a high point overlooking this “sinful town.” The cross was toppled in a storm in 1975. So another cross, this time made of metal, was put in its place … and that’s the one that stands today on a hill—the Serra Gelada—at the end of Levante beach. Be aware that, if you have a mind to visit it, prepare yourself for a marathon hike, lasting 45-50 minutes. No refreshments are offered at the site, so bring your own. The View from La Vila blog—which provides a map showing how to reach the site—says that the cross has since become a kind of unofficial shrine for mostly Brits. They leave photos, flowers and tributes to dead friends and family. The scrawled graffiti on the cross and its base is definitely on the tacky side though. Latest News Benidorm strikes gold with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee break by Benidorm Travel Mart 3 June 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 5 minutes read On February 6 this year the Queen became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms, and the Commonwealth, and to celebrate the occasion Brits were given a four-day holiday from Thursday, June 5. Thousands seized the opportunity for a quick getaway, with huge numbers choosing Benidorm, according to the Costa Blanca hoteliers’ association, Hosbec. Hosbec was quoted by Euro Weekly News as saying: Thousands of British families looked at the principal holiday destinations and Benidorm was one of their preferred choices. According to Hosbec’s calculations, the 15,000 Britons staying in Benidorm hotels for the four-day break or longer make up a whopping 45 percent of all visitors to the resort. It was estimated that they would spend 60,000 nights in the idyllic resort during this period, boosting the economy by €6.3 million. Inevitably, reported EWN, the airport saw increased traffic with 38,000 seats on 206 Alicante-bound flights taking off over the four days. Hosbec said: The Jubilee has had repercussions all over the Costa Blanca. The same communique also pointed out that not only hotels are sharing in the bonanza. Hosbec’s calculations were based on hotel stays, without taking into account visitors staying in tourist apartments, or second residences as well as campsites. Benidorm business owners are delighted by this boost, which follows news that the resort is strongly bouncing back from the Covid lock-downs. Blog Terrific news: Benidorm is getting back to pre-pandemic tourism levels by Benidorm Travel Mart 30 May 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 4 minutes read Spanish newspaper El Espanol reports that according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca is experiencing a surge in tourism. With 433,171 stays it was the second most popular to Madrid, which had 678,886 visitors in the same period. In general, so far this year, establishments in Benidorm have registered 1.8 million overnight stays. This comes after a virtual shutdown of the hotel and the entertainment industries in Valencia and other reasons in April 2021 that made tourist activity impossible. Even better news, according to the newspaper, is the fact that in the Valencian territory—of which Benidorm is part—rising energy, fuel, food, and beverage prices are not being passed onto customers, and prices remain around pre-Covid levels. The report found: Average prices and income per room in the region are well below the average for the sector in Spain. The city of Valencia itself has only recorded a price of 1.3 percent. Blog Exercise caution when visiting this stunning beauty spot near Benidorm by Benidorm Travel Mart 28 May 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 7 minutes read Just 15km from Benidorm and 3km from the centre of Callosa d’en Sarrià, Fonts d’Algar is a beauty spot where nature is at its finest. However local authorities are concerned that people are ignoring warning signs and in recent months four people have died at this renowned “paradise.” The latest to drown was a 25-year-old British man identified as Paul Lebihan who was reportedly trying to save his dog. According to this Sun report he was was pulled unconscious from water near a famous waterfall close to the Fuentes del Algar earlier this month. The latest tragedy in the area takes the death toll this year at the same spot to four. Two people including a guide were killed on April 8 after being swept away by the current after heavy rains. On April 17 a hiker drowned after falling down the waterfall. One police source said, “he was swimming and was swept away by the current.” Image via Comunitat Valenciana The alarm was sounded around 6pm and a helicopter with firefighters, police and paramedics mobilised as part of the emergency response. Witnesses reportedly tried to save him by performing CPR on him before professionals arrived to take over but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Visitors who want to do more than just swim around in the rock pools below the waterfalls are advised to bring hiking boots to negotiate the hills and walkways around the Bolulla and Algar Rivers. The Bolulla waterfall, around a 15-minute hike north of the Algar Waterfalls, is a 65-feet cascade at the end of a ravine. Local Mayor says warning signs are being ignored Bolulla Mayor Adrian Martinez said after the first three people lost their lives in two separate incidents: What we have seen here are examples of rashness. The river has become swollen with heavy rains and people have gone in despite that and we can’t control everything they do. He also flagged up the fact some visitors were ignoring signs warning them to take care. Speaking before the latest tragedy, he said: In the two accidents where three people died the same thing happened. They fell in the area where the Bolulla waterfall is and there’s a sort of turbine effect there and the people who fall get trapped in the water. Equipped with tourist services, Fonts d’Algar was declared a Protected Water Area in 2002. The importance of water The Comunitat Valenciana website, which has stunning photos of Fonts d’Algar, described the spot as a “paradise” and an “oasis” that will show you the importance of water as an ecological, economic and cultural resource. During your visit, you can walk 1.5km along the banks of the river Algar, which in Arabic means “cave”. The pathway will immerse you in a landscape that is the result of the karst process on the limestone, composed of spectacular waterfalls, springs and sources that bubble up out of the rock, as well as the “tolls”, pools where you can take refreshing dips in the pure and crystalline waters. In the past, Fonts de l’Algar was considered a ‘fountain of health’. Fonts de l’Algar also has different hiking trails you can walk with all the family. One such trail is camino al Fort de Bèrnia, in which you’ll come across old terraces, a cave and a farmyard for cattle. Along the way you’ll find information panels telling you about the local area. The trail also affords incredible views over the Calp coast and the sierras of Aitana y Xordà. Come to Fonts de l’Algar and discover a magical landscape.
