Blog Terrific news: Benidorm is getting back to pre-pandemic tourism levels by Benidorm Travel Mart 30 May 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 4 minutes read Spanish newspaper El Espanol reports that according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca is experiencing a surge in tourism. With 433,171 stays it was the second most popular to Madrid, which had 678,886 visitors in the same period. In general, so far this year, establishments in Benidorm have registered 1.8 million overnight stays. This comes after a virtual shutdown of the hotel and the entertainment industries in Valencia and other reasons in April 2021 that made tourist activity impossible. Even better news, according to the newspaper, is the fact that in the Valencian territory—of which Benidorm is part—rising energy, fuel, food, and beverage prices are not being passed onto customers, and prices remain around pre-Covid levels. The report found: Average prices and income per room in the region are well below the average for the sector in Spain. The city of Valencia itself has only recorded a price of 1.3 percent. Blog Exercise caution when visiting this stunning beauty spot near Benidorm by Benidorm Travel Mart 28 May 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 7 minutes read Just 15km from Benidorm and 3km from the centre of Callosa d’en Sarrià, Fonts d’Algar is a beauty spot where nature is at its finest. However local authorities are concerned that people are ignoring warning signs and in recent months four people have died at this renowned “paradise.” The latest to drown was a 25-year-old British man identified as Paul Lebihan who was reportedly trying to save his dog. According to this Sun report he was was pulled unconscious from water near a famous waterfall close to the Fuentes del Algar earlier this month. The latest tragedy in the area takes the death toll this year at the same spot to four. Two people including a guide were killed on April 8 after being swept away by the current after heavy rains. On April 17 a hiker drowned after falling down the waterfall. One police source said, “he was swimming and was swept away by the current.” Image via Comunitat Valenciana The alarm was sounded around 6pm and a helicopter with firefighters, police and paramedics mobilised as part of the emergency response. Witnesses reportedly tried to save him by performing CPR on him before professionals arrived to take over but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Visitors who want to do more than just swim around in the rock pools below the waterfalls are advised to bring hiking boots to negotiate the hills and walkways around the Bolulla and Algar Rivers. The Bolulla waterfall, around a 15-minute hike north of the Algar Waterfalls, is a 65-feet cascade at the end of a ravine. Local Mayor says warning signs are being ignored Bolulla Mayor Adrian Martinez said after the first three people lost their lives in two separate incidents: What we have seen here are examples of rashness. The river has become swollen with heavy rains and people have gone in despite that and we can’t control everything they do. He also flagged up the fact some visitors were ignoring signs warning them to take care. Speaking before the latest tragedy, he said: In the two accidents where three people died the same thing happened. They fell in the area where the Bolulla waterfall is and there’s a sort of turbine effect there and the people who fall get trapped in the water. Equipped with tourist services, Fonts d’Algar was declared a Protected Water Area in 2002. The importance of water The Comunitat Valenciana website, which has stunning photos of Fonts d’Algar, described the spot as a “paradise” and an “oasis” that will show you the importance of water as an ecological, economic and cultural resource. During your visit, you can walk 1.5km along the banks of the river Algar, which in Arabic means “cave”. The pathway will immerse you in a landscape that is the result of the karst process on the limestone, composed of spectacular waterfalls, springs and sources that bubble up out of the rock, as well as the “tolls”, pools where you can take refreshing dips in the pure and crystalline waters. In the past, Fonts de l’Algar was considered a ‘fountain of health’. Fonts de l’Algar also has different hiking trails you can walk with all the family. One such trail is camino al Fort de Bèrnia, in which you’ll come across old terraces, a cave and a farmyard for cattle. Along the way you’ll find information panels telling you about the local area. The trail also affords incredible views over the Calp coast and the sierras of Aitana y Xordà. Come to Fonts de l’Algar and discover a magical landscape. Blog Stay close to the Benidorm beaches that suit you best by Barry Duke 23 May 2022 written by Barry Duke 7 minutes read Back in 2018, the differences that characterise Benidorm’s beaches were highlighted when a woman from Blackburn, demanded compensation from Thomas Cook after she discovered that the hotel in which she was accommodated—The Poseidon Playa—was full of Spanish people! Freda Jackson, 81 demanded to know why “rude” Spanish holidaymakers in this wonderful beach-side hotel couldn’t find somewhere else to stay. I recalled that incident when I met some friends this week for a drink at the Poseidon Playa—and yes, the majority enjoying its fabulous facilities were indeed Spanish. That’s because Playa Poniente—a beach that stretches from the centre of Benidorm westwards for 3.1 km—is both beautiful and quiet. Rowdiness is certainly not a feature. It starts just behind the marina and stretches as far as Tossal de la Cala, where you’ll find the hermitage “Virgen del Mar” situated on top of the hill at the end of the beach. This sandy beach is especially popular with older people, and so during the day, there is a wide range of senior gymnastics, yoga and various fitness programmes. Playa Poniente. Image Lauren Bate via Pexels. An amazing difference to Levante Beach Because it rarely gets too crowded it is in direct contrast to Levante Beach, which is much closer to where most Brits choose their accommodation. Accommodation near Levante beach, according to this report, allows one to watch the sunrise and is located in what everyone calls the New Town. It’s the most popular beach with Brits and stretches from the beginning of the Old Town to the Rincon de Loix. It has fine golden sand, sunbeds and sunshades to rent, lifeguards are in attendance and the beach is backed by cafes, bars and restaurants. Some of these are quite loud and partying people spill on to the promenade. Some bars offer live entertainment. At the Rincon de Loix end there is a permanent water ski course and you can also participate in watersports like parasail, jetski and banana boats from here. In the summer months the boat to the island stops here to pick up passengers. Why I live near Playa Poniente When I chose to settle in Spain, my first priority was to learn as much Spanish as possible, so I chose an apartment close to Playa Poniente. It was a wise decision because virtually all my neighbours are Spanish and I quickly picked up some useful phrases—as well as a number of “naughty” words. Although the Levante and Playa Poniente are Benkidorm’s best-known beaches, there are others, each with their own special characteristics. After settling in Spain the one I chose for a daily workout was Playa Mal Pas, described by one fella on Trip Advisor thus: It is a little cove situated between the bigger Levante and Poniente beaches. There are rocks you can lie on or loungers for a charge. The sea is so clear and very easy to walk in … It really is the loveliest place and when you’ve finished swimming or sun bathing you can walk up the steps and you’re right in the old town with it’s bars and tapas restaurants … Image credit: Barry Duke With a backdrop of yellow rocks and palm trees, it’s a gift to photographers. I had the pleasure of doing a photo shoot with renowned Spanish model Juan Torregrosa, above, at that location a few years back. Blog Rebuilt Benidorm bullring will add exciting new activities—except bullfighting! by Barry Duke 21 May 2022 written by Barry Duke 7 minutes read A report we published recently details plans for the resort’s defunct bullring. These plans, to the delight of animal rights activists, will not include actual bullfighting. In recent years, the 60-year-old building has been predominantly used to host concerts and other events, although its deteriorating condition prompted a 2018 report which advised against using the structure for large public events due to safety concerns. Now, the bullring, which saw its last bullfight around 12 years ago, is set to be transformed into a multi-functional venue for a huge variety of events and activities partly funded by the Town Hall and European Regional Development Funds. A dying culture The report prompted me to examine the current state of Spain’s bullfighting industry, and I discovered that it’s in deep trouble. There are several reasons for this, not least being the Covid pandemic which prevented bullfights for around two years. The second is that the socialist Government—despite the fact that bullfighting is regarded as a “cultural activity”—refuses to subsidise it. What it has done instead to assist the recovery of cultural events which suffered greatly during lock-downs is to offer its citizens who turn 18 in 2022 €400.00 each. This money, which will cost the government €190 million, is to spend at cinemas, concerts and the like. An estimated half a million teens will be able to get in on the action—providing they don’t wish to attend any bullfighting events. The majority of Spain’s citizens deplore bullfighting The third, and most important, is that the Spanish are developing a visceral dislike of this form of blood sport (see video of a huge animal rights demonstration in Pamplona.) Image via YouTube “This decision by the Spanish government is yet another indication that the tide is turning against cruel and archaic bullfights,” a representative for animal rights organisation PETA told Euronews Culture. PETA claims the sport uses “barbaric” methods to weaken and impair the animals. This terrible cruelty needs to end—and fast! Bulls selected to participate in performances have been known to be drugged, slapped with sandbags, and have petroleum jelly is smeared into their eyes to confuse them. What would in some quarters be deemed a “successful” performance by the matador often leads to the animal’s ears being cut off and presented as a trophy. The PETA representative said: Since the overwhelming majority of Spanish people—particularly members of the younger generations—oppose these bloody spectacles in which sensitive animals are tortured to death for entertainment, it’s only a matter of time before the whole country joins the more than 100 Spanish towns and cities that have already declared themselves to be against bullfighting. In my deep dive into bullfighting, I was appalled to read on Benidorm All Year Round this comment from a geezer called Chris Shaw: As a British family we all love going to the bullrings in Spain. We have taken our children to many bullfights and they now have there own families who go to bullfights. It is a pity that more British people don’t give it a try, most of them would love it. It is a great shame that Benidorm bullring is blacklisted as I am sure proper bullfights here would get more British fans for the sport. The world “pillock” immediately sprang to mind. Latest News ‘Green’ Benidorm sets a magnificent example with its recycling strategies by Benidorm Travel Mart 19 May 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 5 minutes read According to the data provided by the resort’s Mayor “in the first four months of 2022, the volume of glass recycling has almost tripled compared to 2021, going from 288,630 kilos recovered to 832,340”. Cool Radio quoted Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez as saying: For more than a decade, Benidorm has always been among the municipalities in Spain with the highest volume of glass recycling per inhabitant, far exceeding the national average Recycling dipped during the Covid pandemic but according to Gómez, people have started to recycle their waste materials once more, making use of an increased number of containers spread throughout the resort. Not only glass Image by Jan Helebrant via Pixabay The recycling of packaging has grown more than 27 percent in the first months of the year. A total of 220,400 kilos were recovered. Add to that the recycling of 323,380 kilos of paper and cardboard and you have an increase of 45 percent of materials recovered. Benidorm’s green strategies have also seen a greater increase in the number of recycled batteries, an increase of over 120 percent. Gómez said that in addition to recycling “glass, paper, packaging and batteries, which are usually the most common waste, the City Council also favours the recycling of other waste such as furniture, electrical appliances, rubble, pruning remains, car batteries or fluorescent tubes. In 2020, the resort gained its third mobile Ecopark vehicle. Image via Benidorm.org The mobile Ecopark service operates from Monday to Friday. This enables people to get rid of all manner of unwanted items, usually from the comfort of their doorsteps. Items picked up include cooking oil, vehicle oil, batteries, small electronic devices, and small toxic container devices. It’s practically a door-to-door service and is proving enormously popular. Blog Brits outraged as Irish get preferential treatment at Spanish airports by Barry Duke 16 May 2022 written by Barry Duke 6 minutes read Ever since travel started to become normal once more after the Coronavirus pandemic, British tourists have been caught up in long queues as they try to enter Spain and other EU countries—and they are far from happy about what appears to be the luck of the Irish. Many have taken to social media to complain that the Irish are getting “preferential treatment.” Image via Twitter Last week I actually heard one disgruntled Brit accuse the authorities at Alicante airport of “racism” towards Brits after she was held up in a queue, and angrily watched Irish travellers who were on the same flight sail through without any checks. The problem was highlighted at the end of April by The Mirror, which reported that “Spain airport sees Irish tourists given ‘preferential treatment’ as angry Brits watch on.” It was referring to Malaga airport. It went on to explain: Since Brexit, British tourists are only allowed to stay in the Schengen area (a free movement area without border controls that includes 26 countries including Spain but excluding Ireland) for 90 out of 180 days and must get their passports stamped when they leave or could face being refused entry on another visit. Meanwhile, Irish citizens benefit from EU-wide passenger rights for travel into, out of, or within the EU by air, rail, bus or coach or ship. According to a Dublin Live report, travellers have been sharing pictures from Malaga Airport which has been sectioned off into two separate passport queues. One is sealed off with black tape and signposted with a union jack for ‘all passengers’. The other is enclosed with green tape and shows an Irish tricolour and EU flag while labelled for ‘EU citizens’. A Twitter user said: Sitting in Malaga Airport to return. What a joke! A huge queue for UK passengers stretching all the way back to duty free exit…whilst the lane for EU empty. Another added: Preferential treatment for the one flight to Ireland. Travellers beware. A third wrote: Queues for passport control are ridiculous. Allow an extra hour after security for the passport control. Missed flights The Mirror report came after up to 3,000 passengers missed their flights at Madrid Airport over the Easter break. There are now fears those scenes could be repeated throughout the summer. Those doing all the whinging can’t seem to get it into their heads that, having chosen to leave the EU, Britain placed itself on a long list of foreign countries, and its citizens are required to follow the same rules as those coming from all other non-EU countries. Bottom line: The Irish are not getting “preferential” treatment because—lucky them—Ireland is an EU country, and long may it remain so! Blog Why the Costa Blanca attracts rock climbers from across the globe by Barry Duke 15 May 2022 written by Barry Duke 6 minutes read Most people who visit travel sites such as Benidorm Travel Mart will be aware of that of the enormous number of attractions that can be found along the Costa Blanca, but few know that rock climbers from around the globe come to this region of Spain where you can find some of the finest bolted limestone crags in the country. Spain Info reports that there there are two main areas. One is the Sella crag, situated about 20km inland from Villajoyosa on the AP-7 motorway. Sella remains the most popular area in the Costa Blanca. UK Climbing says: There is enough climbing to spend a whole week’s holiday here, although other areas are worth a visit too! The most popular section is the long ridge in the centre of the valley which has a superb series of south-facing walls and buttresses. The site adds: In hot weather the north-facing Pared de Rosalía is well-worth considering. With its fine long routes in the mid and harder grades. Further along the road from the main area is the Mecca for hard rock climbers, called the Hidden Valley. You can’t really miss the final jewel in the crown. The Divino sits majestically above everything and is worth attention from all those rock climbers who demand a bit more from their climbing. Perfect for less experienced rock climbers For less experienced rock climbers who wish to use Benidorm as a base, there’s a “baby” mountain at neighboring La Cala. It can prove an arduous climb. But it’s worth it for at its peak there’s the Renaissance watchtower of l’Aguilò. A view from the top of La Cala’s mountain. Photo credit: Barry Duke. The Torre de l’Aguilo was built in the 1500s to protect the coastline from North African pirates. The tower was manned by soldiers whose job was to spot any incoming ships and give a warning by lighting a signal fire on the top platform. It has been fully restored, and there is a modern metal staircase that takes you into the tower itself. However, when I visited it was firmly shut and padlocked. There are two routes but the longest is the easiest and begins on the road as you head out of La Cala from the beach. The entrance is on the left, it’s a comfortable path to walk with some steep climbs, so go with appropriate footwear. At the foot of the tower, the views are breathtaking and there are places to rest while contemplating the landscape. If you continue down the other side you will find a small enclave where you can swim and sunbathe in the nude at a beach called Raco Conill. Latest News Chaos at UK airports as passengers burst into tears by Benidorm Travel Mart 13 May 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 4 minutes read The chaos at airports in the UK continues today. Passengers have complained of long queues at both Leeds Bradford Airport and Birmingham Airport. Holidaymakers who were caught up in the chaos took to social media to express their frustration about “mile-long” queues. Ongoing disruption at airports across the country has been blamed on an industry-wide problem with staffing levels following Covid and a spike in demand for travel. One Twitter user with the handle @DerrenN said there were “unbelievable queues” at Birmingham Airport just after 5 am. They said: “@bhx_official this is the worst I’ve ever seen at an airport. Unbelievable queues today.” Photo credit TWITTER/@papagiak Another raged: “@bhx_official we can’t get through to your help desk for anything- a queue of 400m long and you’ve done nothing to fix it?” The queues are the latest chaos hitting airports up and down the country in recent weeks. Passengers have warned of people bursting into tears, feeling faint amid long delays. Dennis Hall slammed his check-in at Leeds Bradford last Friday as a “disaster” after he waited more than three hours to board his flight to Greece. Sarah Dreier said she’d missed her flight to Fuerteventura despite arriving at the airport three hours before; there was total chaos, according to her. The spokesperson for Birmingham Airport said, “Queues were long but managed and moving this morning as we helped many of the more than 14,000 customers booked to fly out of BHX today.” Asking passengers to arrive at their airport on time is one way they are helping keep queues moving. He continued by saying that it would be helpful if people removed any liquids, gels, pastes, or electrical items from their bags before going through security. Blog Stay sober, stay safe by Barry Duke 12 April 2022 written by Barry Duke 7 minutes read A lesson I learned on the very first day I took a vacation in Spain decades before I settled here is that one shot of one’s favourite alcoholic drink is the roughly the equivalent of three measures in the UK. It was a lesson I never forgot because I spent the first two days of my holiday in Sitges driving the porcelain bus in my self-catering apartment and nursing two black eyes sustained when a lamp-post came out of nowhere and hit me in the face. Since then I have lost count of the number of holidaymakers I’ve seen in Benidorm who have have collapsed in the street or targeted by muggers, on the prowl for easy prey. This is not to say Benidorm is unsafe. Far from it. In reality Benidorm is as safe as any other busy tourist resort where the majority of petty crime takes place late at night. But, like in any other city, you need to keep your wits about you, and if all all possible, walk along alleys and streets with companions. Now you can forgive first-time visitors to Spain for over-indulging. They simply aren’t aware of how generous the spirit measures are. The results, as my own experience proved, are rarely pretty, although sometimes can be amusing. A while back a young newcomer to Benidorm got chatting to me in a bar, and asked whether I would give him a tour of the many gay bars in the Old Town. At the time he seemed perfectly sober and I readily agreed. We were in our third pub when said he was popping out for a cigarette. When he failed to return after 15 minutes I went out to check on him. He was nowhere to be seen. Just then a Spanish guy shouted out to me and pointed to a nearby wheelie bin. Puzzled, I looked in, and there was Brett, out cold in the garbage. It took me a while to revive him, and half-an-hour get him sober enough to tell me where he was staying. Naturally, I felt partly responsible for him getting into that state, and felt obliged to bundle him in a taxi and accompany back to his hotel. Image by bridgesward via Pixabay It’s understandable that people can inadvertently get plastered by not realising how large and cheap alcohol measures here can be, but I have no sympathy for those who set out with the sole aim of getting drunk in the shortest time possible, then end up by disgracing themselves by behaving badly or getting injured. Far worse, some die as a result of falling off or jumping from balconies. In 2019, The Sun reported that The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) warned holidaymakers to “use your balcony sensibly and keep an eye on friends who may be the worse for wear”. In an online poster aimed at cutting the number of deaths that occurred in Spanish resorts, it reminded people that “your balcony is there for relaxing on. It’s not a shortcut to your friend’s room or a diving board to a pool.” And it pointed out that “Some holidaymakers die or are severely injured every year as a result of inappropriate behavior on balconies, often after having a few drinks.” Furthermore, the UK Foreign Office warned that “some local councils will impose fines to those caught behaving irresponsibly on balconies or jumping from balconies into swimming pools. Don’t unnecessary risks around balconies, particularly if you’re under the influence of drink or drugs. “Your travel insurance may not cover you for incidents that take place on a balcony or if you were under the influence of drink or drugs when it happened.” Most Spanish people I speak to simply cannot fathom why foreign visitors to their country feel the need to abuse alcohol in this way. Sure, the Spanish like their drink, but intend to indulge while eating, and rarely do they get wasted to the same degree as tourists, whom they frequent refer to as being drunk as a clam (borracho como una almeja.) A 2021 study that examined heavy episodic drinking found that Spaniards are the third least likely to get blind drunk, after Cypriots and Italians, and that Spaniards’ tendency to drink in moderation “continues to prevail.” Be sensible in the sun Photo credit: Alexandr Podvalny via Pexels On arriving in Benidorm or other sunny resorts thousands head for the beach from the moment the sun rises, and by sundown, a large number are burnt lobster red. So follow the example many Spanish set: sunbath at times when you’re less likely to suffer skin burn, or worse, develop melanoma. According to this report, sun damage to the body is caused by invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Tanning is a sign of the skin reacting to potentially damaging UV radiation by producing additional pigmentation that provides it with some, but often not enough, protection against sunburn. Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. People of all skin colors are at risk for this damage. You can reduce your risk by: Limiting your time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense. Wearing clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun, such as long-sleeve shirts, pants, sunglasses, and broad-brim hats. Sun-protective clothing is now available. (The FDA regulates these products only if they are intended to be used for medical purposes.) Using broad spectrum sunscreens with a SPF value of 15 or higher regularly and as directed. (Broad spectrum sunscreens offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays, two types of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.) Reading the label to ensure you use your sunscreen correctly. Consulting a health care professional before applying sunscreen to infants younger than 6 months. 12 April 2022 0 comment 0 FacebookTwitterPinterestEmail
Blog No dear, that’s not Ibiza! by Barry Duke 12 April 2022 written by Barry Duke 6 minutes read Alarm bells jangled when my mate Alan, over a pint at The Tortoise & Hare , told me that he planned to pack in his job and become a holiday rep in Benidorm. “Is that wise?” I asked. And I told him that I had met a number of people who had become reps and ended up needing therapy. They developed nervous tics, migraines, uncontrollable rages, agoraphobia, and addictions to tranquillizers, anti-depressants, and alcohol. When Alan insisted that he was bored to death with his call centre job in Bradford and needed something more challenging, I suggested he become a lion tamer. Or a professional javelin-catcher. Or learn to be a bomb-disposal operative. But Alan was determined. “What could possibly go wrong?”, he asked. I saw him again a year later after he had been discharged from St Tabitha’s Retreat for the Terribly Traumatised. He was still heavily sedated and only began to talk of how he wound up there after his sixth cup of strong coffee and a couple of amphetamines. “I couldn’t handle the stupid questions,” he croaked, and began trotting out examples: • is the big rock I can see from my Benidorm hotel balcony Ibiza? • Does Benidorm have a beach? • Is Benidorm an island? • Are there any pharmacies/doctors/dentists in Benidorm. • Is Spain in Europe? • Why is my hotel full of Spanish people? • Where can I find the third floor? (To this he replied “get in a lift and press the button between two and four”—and got a funny look for his helpful answer.) Then there were the endless complaints, most frequent being that the food in the hotels and nearby restaurants was “rubbish”. Asked to elaborate, they would explain that “it’s not what we are used to back home.” Apparently Spanish chicken nuggets, sausages and bacon are far inferior to the UK variety of these nourishing delicacies. But what finally sent him off the rails was the realisation that many British holidaymakers, unlike their Dutch, German or Scandinavian counterparts, don’t actually come to Spain to enjoy themselves. Heavens to Betsy, no! They come to find fault, and will spend endless hours researching ways of squeezing compensation out of holiday companies for imagined service failures, or for more serious issues, like food poisoning. But what led to Alan being hauled off by a team in white coats to St Tabitha’s was something he called the Package Holiday Shuffle. Apparently people on these all-inclusive deals never approach their reps directly; crablike, they slowly shuffle up to them, look them up and down for the longest time, then finally ask “ummm … you a holiday rep?” Something snapped in Alan when this happened for the 20th time in one day, and he screamed: “No, I’m only wearing this %&$!@ing uniform because there’s a fiesta on the go and I’m in fancy dress!” Management, as well as guests within earshot, were appalled at this outburst and it was decided that Alan needed to be escorted off the premises by health professionals. The good news is that he now appears fully recovered and is ecstatic in his new job playing the role of Donald Duck for a company that organises parties for kids – SPANISH kids! Blog Benidorm: a magnet to millions where the truth is stranger than the myths by Benidorm Travel Mart 12 April 2022 written by Benidorm Travel Mart 13 minutes read There are many strange myths about Benidorm, one of Spain’s most important tourist destinations, and a magnet to visitors from around the globe. Today around million holidaymakers visit Benidorm every year, making it Europe’s third-busiest destination after London and Paris. Although the British remain the principal market, it is also popular with Dutch and Belgian tourists – and many Spaniards too. But the true facts about this resort are far more astonishing than the bunkum. My favourite fact concerns the efforts of Pedro Zaragoza—the man credited with Benidorm’s creation, to get Catholic Spain to accept the bikini. Photo by Museums Victoria via Unsplash Zaragoza, who died in 2008 aged 85, had seen pictures of the two-piece swimming costumes in magazines. He liked what he saw, and knew that—in northern Europe—they had become enormously popular. But in Catholic Spain, they were condemned by the Church and banned by Franco’s regime. As far back as 1907, strict rules were enforced in Benidorm to ensure public decency. Men and women were forbidden to bathe together on the beaches of the resort. Each had separate sections they were permitted to occupy, with most of the children being in the women`s section. These regulations were mandatory for anyone who visited Benidorm. The rules also clearly stated that “No person can bathe during the day without covering themselves decently,” and members of the opposite sex were also not permitted to walk or stand outside their own zones. No one really knows when this rule was faded out but it is thought it lasted for around five years. In 1953—cocking a snook at later laws governing public decency—Zaragoza, who became mayor of the resort in 1950 aged 28, did the unthinkable. He authorised the wearing of bikinis in his town. No one in the country had attempted this, and there was uproar. As members of the Civil Guard scuffled with scantily-clad girls on Benidorm’s beaches, the local archbishop threatened to excommunicate Zaragoza, who then decided to appeal directly to Spain’s most feared dictator, General Franco. At 6 am one morning he set off for Madrid on his Vespa motor scooter, arriving in the Spanish capital eight hours later. “I changed my shirt but I went into the General with my trousers spattered with motor oil,” he later claimed. “He backed me, and the bikini stayed.” Now to my favourite myth about Benidorm: the city has to import sand from Morocco to maintain its fabulous beaches. This “fact” apparently originated when a tour rep told this to a coachload of tourists heading from Alicante airport to their hotel in Benidorm in the early 70s. His comment passed into media history, and many still believe it is true. The fact is that the resort’s seven kilometres of silky soft sand are absolutely natural, and the city is actually an exporter that supplies high-grade sand to a number of the local resorts. The truth is that Benidorm spends more on keeping just its beaches clean than most cities do on all their streets. Another true fact is that the Costa Blanca, literally in English “White Coast”, was devised as a promotional name used by BEA when they launched their air service (for £38.16s.) between London and Valencia. The Costa Blanca comprises 200 kilometres or so of coastline belonging to the province of Alicante in Spain. When Zaragoza—a former phosphate miner and railway porter—took over as mayor of Benidorm in 1950 it was a sleepy Spanish village with few amenities. Today it is a forest of high-rise hotels and (300+) overlooking an amazing variety of pubs catering to the tastes of numerous nationalities. While there is now a resident population of some 60,000, in the summer this number reaches around a million; many of these visitors return year after year. This transformation was largely the work of Zaragoza, who remained mayor for 17 years. Initially, he’d never envisaged development on such a scale. In the early days, he visualised a small town with attractive plazas and boulevards, lush gardens and comfortable hotels. “Holidays,” he once said, “used to be just for the rich. Mother and children decamped to a cool summer spot for three months and the husband stayed a fortnight then returned to the city. I thought humbler, middle-class people deserved holidays, too.” Having arranged for water to be pumped to Benidorm from 10 miles distant to service the village, Zaragoza set about encouraging package tour operators who could fly planeloads of tourists to Spain. As Benidorm was gradually transformed, he became an enthusiast for high-rise architecture: ‘I realised that if we built upwards we could have more space around. People could be near the beach, they could have balconies, fresh air, a sea view.’Pedro Zaragoza, who transformed a village into a thriving, world-class resort Myths and fables The most enduring myth about Benidorm is that it was originally a fishing village. This is simply untrue. The fishermen of Benidorm were actually deep-sea fishermen who spent many months in the Atlantic, South America and north of Spain. They were famous all over Spain for their skills with trap netting and were much sought after in the 18th century. They had for many years used Almadraba netting—an ancient Arabic tradition—to catch Tuna by placing a maze of deep-sea netting to progressively smaller inshore pools. A tradition which continued until the 1950s at the Rincon De Loix to catch Tuna as they migrated across the Mediterranean. Another myth is that the resort has to import sand from Morocco to maintain its fabulous beaches. Benidorm spends more on keeping just its beaches clean than most cities do on all their streets! Photo credit: Dimitry Anikin via Pexels A third myth relates to the gap in the mountain range that looms over Benidorm. This claims that King James I was mounted on his horse at the top of the Puig Campana peak when the animal gave the mountain a kick, resulting in a piece coming loose and being launched into the sea, creating Benidorm, or “Bird” Island. Another, more romantic legend tells of the giant named Roldán who was in love with a woman named Alda. When she died due to a curse, Roldán removed a piece of the mountain so the sun’s rays could filter through and illuminate her. A fourth myth is that Benidorm is packed packed with mostly British tourists, but, as the Icelolly site points out: In reality the resort is as popular among Spanish nationals as it is with the British. This combined with the fact that many Spaniards live and work in Benidorm means that you will hear accents and dialects from all over Spain. The site dispels the myth that Benidorm only offers British pub food and fast food and fry-ups. Photo credit: Meineresterampe via Pixabay Nothing could be further from the truth. Thanks to its status as an international tourist destination, the resort has restaurants offering cuisines from all over the world, including Italian, Chinese, Thai and Indian—and, of course, some that do British fry-ups. Naturally, there are a huge number of Spanish restaurants that serve tapas and fresh seafood, as well as regional cuisines such as fish stew and paella. While it’s true that the beaches are crowded in the summer months, there’s a lot more to the resort than simply lying on recliners and towels, soaking up the rays and turning oneself lobster read. There is a range of water sports on offer including jet-skiing and scuba diving, and families can have loads of fun at one of the theme or water parks, or at the go-karting track. A 30-minute drive into the countryside will take you to Algar Falls, a beautiful area of waterfalls with pools for swimming, just north of Benidorm. Steffen Lemmerzahl via Unsplash Further on there’s the village of Guadalest. Occupying one of the most stunning positions in Spain, this small village is precariously perched on the pinnacle of a granite mountain, giving fabulous views across the valley carved out by the river from which the village takes its name. Details of these attractions, and how to find them, can be found here.
